Some of you may know who Cecil Hook is. For those who don't, I'll introduce him—he's a writer and former preacher. While I've never met him, I've corresponded by e-mail with him on occasion over the past few years. I've found his love for Christ and passion for thinking deeply about the Scriptures to be inspiring.

For many years, and with the help of his close friends and family, Cecil has authored an e-mail list and website called Freedom's Ring. His essays have consistently been encouraging, and have provoked many thousands of people—myself included—to search the Scriptures more fully to eradicate the errors in our thinking about them.

Unfortunately, Cecil's health is failing, so I thought I'd share this note his daughter recently sent to his readers:

So many of you have sent notes and cards to us. For that we are thankful.

Dad [Cecil] has lived his life well and it shows by the wonderful memories people have of him. I thought I would use the newsletter this time to give you an update on Dad's health and reprint one of his chapters from Free in Christ. I can remember the first time I read it. It made me think that I wanted my actions to be "songs of praise divinely motivated." I hope it encourages you too.

Dad continues to rest comfortably. He has little pain. He has terrible chills and sweats that are caused by the tumor, but he says that they cause him no pain, just discomfort. He has little appetite. Simple foods sound the best.  Blue Bell vanilla ice cream still tastes good!

His mind is still strong, but he tires so quickly, that it is hard for him to complete the things he wants to do or say or write. He is still trying to get up each day to read e-mail.

Your cards, e-mails and visits have been an encouragement to him. He continues to face each day with courage, although his body is letting him down. His faith is strong and he says he is at peace with the situation.

Please continue to pray for him that he will have peace and go to be with God with no suffering. Please, don't send him any cures or medical advice. He has chosen to be on hospice, so please respect his wishes. Pray for me as I care for him that I can make him as comfortable as possible. Pray for my family during this time.

    With love,

    Mira

Please pray for Cecil's comfort and for his family.

Here is a link to the chapter of Cecil's book Free in Christ that Mira sent along with the update. It's called Free Expression: Our Response to Grace. I thought it was an excellent chapter about serving God as an expression of love from the heart rather than simply serving Him with the goal of following His commands.

UPDATE

  • Cecil Hook passed away Friday night, June 1.
