OK, so Scott Ott of Scrappleface wasn't writing a parable about Christian peace, liberty, and unity. But, as Alexander Campbell might say, "The parable is just, and the interpretation thereof, easy and sure."
In a post entitled "Annan: Bush Destroying Arab Unity," Scott writes about Bush's Middle East peace efforts with tongue firmly planted in cheek:
(2005-03-04) -- The Bush administration's foreign policy blunders threaten to "drive a wedge through the Arab world destroying the unity which has kept the middle east peaceful for decades," according to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Tongue in cheek or not, you have to admit--there is a grain or two of truth in here somewhere for us Christians contemplating a more peaceful coexistence amongst ourselves.
So is it possible for the preaching of peace and liberty to actually destroy Christian unity? When it comes to the destruction of unity, or the promotion of discord, I'd be more comfortable placing blame on things like pride, selfish ambition, and other works of the flesh--not the patient work for peace among brothers and sisters in Christ. No doubt, though, there are some that would rather place blame on the peacemakers rather than accept responsibility themselves for the disunity Christians find themselves in.
