Sometimes my kids need a good chat with their dad. They seem to go through some rough periods from time to time where they struggle with their behavior and it soon becomes clear that they need an attitude adjustment. As parents, my husband and I often sit down together when we recognize a problem with one of the children and we decide what the best course of action is. Without fail a good talk with dad is high up on the list.
God is awesome to give us parenthood to teach us so many lessons about our relationship with Him. I find myself going through rough periods where I struggle with my behavior and I am in desperate need of an attitude adjustment.
But where do I begin? Well, the only way to know what behavior our Father expects from us is to go to His words and find out. And just like my kids…the lessons will not be learned in one session. It takes time and effort to learn and apply those instructions to my life.
Often, these attitude adjustments for our children require pretty strict discipline from their dad. There’s a side of dad that can intimidate a child. However, that is not all there is to their relationship. They spend wonderful times together with encouraging words so when the attitude adjustment is needed, they recognize that it is done out of love. We should have that same kind of relationship with God. We recognize that He needs to correct us from time to time but our relationship is also one that should view Him as our dad. There is a complexity to this relationship, a balance between love and reverence that we must have for our Father. To know Him better we need to spend more time in prayer communicating with Him and more time in His word so He can communicate with us.
One thing I know for sure is that when I spend less time with my Father I soon become in desperate need of an attitude adjustment. How about you? Why not go have a good chat with your dad?
“And do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” ~ Romans 12:2
