New music for congregational singing

I believe the music of a church has a lot to do with its spiritual growth and health. God gave us music for a reason, and we should use it to teach, inspire, and encourage.

Several people have asked about how to get copies of the music I brought to the campfire at Shaver Lake, so here goes.

First, I highly recommend getting a CCLI license. It is the easiest way to make your copies legal and fair to the songwriter, and in some cases, it's the only way to do so.

The Immortal Cell: Why Cancer Research Fails

Book Review: The Immortal Cell by Dr. Gerald B. Dermer

The Immortal Cell: Why Cancer Research FailsI don't even remember where I was introduced to this book or this author, but I know it has helped shape my thinking on modern cancer research. Why am I interested in cancer research? I don't even know, other than the fact that we spend so much on it as a society, with so few results.

The premise of the book is that a large part of the cancer research establishment is using a flawed approach by conducting their research on cell lines that have been cultured in petri dishes for decades. This is not an accurate basis for curing cancer, Dr. Dermer argues, and he makes the case pretty persuasively.

Book Review: Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerichs

Love and RespectOk women, brace yourselves....

I’ve read many marriage books and attended many bible studies on this topic and I have to say that most of the time wives are given the easier pill to swallow when it comes to resolving marital conflict. There seems to be an undertone that the real problem lies with our husband, but in order to make peace in the marriage we must accept our small percentage of the problem. After all, we have to admit that it takes two to argue, right?

Was Genesis Written by Moses?

Was the Genesis record authored by Moses, or mashed up from unknown sources by unknown editors, as proponents of the Documentary Hypothesis (DH) would like us to believe? Maybe neither, as it turns out. There is an alternative hypothesis that makes a lot of sense and preserves the notion of divine caretaking of the ancient history of mankind.

Camping at Black Rock Campground Near Idaho City

Micah with gopher snake at Black Rock Campground, IdahoOver Labor Day, we camped at Black Rock Campground, which is about 45 minutes off-road from Idaho City. It's a pretty area, tucked in next to the North Fork of the Boise River. The fishing didn't look that great, since it's only about 18 inches deep this time of year, but the kids had a blast wading in the river. Good thing...I forgot to bring the fishing poles. But we did catch a little gopher snake!

Going on Labor Day weekend was a bit of a gamble, since we didn't plan the trip in time to make reservations. So we just went hoping to find an empty spot, and we lucked out. There were two spaces with reservation tags on them, but one of them had expired. I think other last-minute campers probably saw the tag and left thinking it was full.

Saty and Sarah baptized in the Boise River

Saty and Sarah on the day of their baptism
Saty and Sarah on the day of their baptism
I have awesome news to share with everyone. Saty and Sarah were baptized in the Boise River on Sunday, January 6, 2008! It was unbelievably cold, but a very joyful day!

We made plans on Saturday when it was only sprinkling outside and relatively warm for a January day (in the forties)—but woke up to a beautiful snow-covered landscape on Sunday morning!

As cold as it was, it was beautiful, and so cool to have my niece Robyn and little Diego here to share it with us!

We used the take-out ramp at Ann Morrison Park where rafters can pull out in the summer. It's located just west of the foot bridge.

Forgiveness is divine

Whenever I feel I’ve been wronged or somehow offended, I try to remember to ask myself how it compares to the wrongs inflicted on Jesus Christ. If we are to be truly Christlike, we have to ask this question, because it puts forgiveness in a whole new perspective.

Has someone hurt my feelings? How much more were the feelings of the Son of God trampled when His own creation rose up against Him and crucified Him? Has someone hurt my pride? Jesus moreso. God’s own Son, the Word made flesh, left his home in heaven and was made a little lower than the angels. Yet he took it honorably and without complaint. What in the world could I possibly have to complain about that compares to that? Not much, I figure.

Attributing good motives

It's my experience that one of the most kind and useful things we can do to facilitate edifying relationships with other believers is to assume they have good motives. When I don't recognize that a fellow Christian is sincere in what I perceive to be his error, it is far too easy to dismiss him or demonize him. Too often, I've treated a brother in error as if he is a brother wanting to be in error. The truth is that there is no other kind of brother but a brother in error while we are in this human body, and few of us want to remain in error.

I've been working on the perfect steak for years, and I thought I'd share the results of my labors here. Steak has become almost as much of a passion as homemade ice cream.

Sweet bourbon salmon recipe

This recipe is a variation of the famous Lone Star Steakhouse sweet bourbon salmon, adjusted to my tastes and family size. If you don't like fish normally, you might like it prepared this way. It's not fishy at all.

(Thanks Daniel for providing us with a nice supply of fresh Alaskan salmon!)
